College beat: UIS men's basketball tops former coach Bill Walker, Missouri S&T

Feb. 14-- Feb. 14--University of Illinois Springfield senior guard Daniel Soetan recorded 33 points and sabotaged Missouri S&T coach Bill Walker's return to the Recreation and Athletic Center in the Stars' 87-74 Great Lakes Valley Conference men's basketball victory on Thursday.

Walker previously coached at UIS before he was let go following the end of last season, going 59-80 over five seasons in blue and gold.

UIS, which won the fourth of its last seven games, shot 52.7 percent from the floor, spearheaded by Soetan. He went 10 of 16 from the floor and 4 of 5 from 3-point range. UIS shot 40 percent (12 of 26) from beyond the arc.

Matt Wendling chipped in 15 points with a couple of treys while Chase Robinson and Keymonta Johnson added 13 and 11 points, respectively.

UIS (13-10, 6-9 in the GLVC) pulled ahead 23-13 midway through the first half and led comfortably ahead by double digits through most of the second half.

Dulan Scott led the Miners (5-16, 3-12 GLVC) with 19 points.

Loggers stumble on the road

QUINCY -- Lincoln Land Community College traveled to face Mid-West Athletic Conference foe John Wood, which overwhelmed the Loggers early for an 88-62 rout.

After leading by 11 with four minutes to remain in the first half, John Wood went on a run to take a 50-26 lead into the half.

Lincoln Land hosts Illinois Wesleyan on Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Cass Gymnasium.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Stars rally past Missouri S&T

The University of Illinois Springfield women's basketball team rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to knock off Missouri S&T 83-76 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game on Thursday at The Recreation and Athletic Center.

UIS trailed by as much as 14 points in the second quarter and fell behind 40-29 at halftime. UIS (8-15, 3-12 in the GLVC) turned things around in the fourth quarter, outscoring Missouri S&T 35-20 in the period.

The Prairie Stars shot 10 of 14 from the field and 4 of 5 from 3-point range in the final 10 minutes. Jasmine Sangster and Makenna Fee had 15 points apiece for UIS. Malea Jackson and Lauren Ladowski each had 12 points while Katelyn Rosner and Tehya Fortune added 10 apiece.

Mykala Baylor led Missouri S&T (7-15, 3-12 GLVC) with 22 points.

No. 3 Loggers throttle John Wood

QUINCY -- Lincoln Land Community College sophomore Havilyn Dulin racked up 19 points and seven steals and the No. 3-ranked Loggers defeated John Wood Community College 73-57 in a Mid-West Athletic Conference matchup.

Three other Loggers reached double figures. Sadie Bueker had 15 points, followed by Maclayne Taylor (14) and Kennedy Bauer (10). Bauer also had nine rebounds.

Taylor and Bueker had four and three steals, respectively.

LLCC (23-2, 4-1 in the MWAC) forced 32 turnovers in the win. Sophomore guard Hannah Wallen had four points, seven assists and four steals.

Lincoln Land returns home Saturday at 1 p.m. against Lewis & Clark.
