Cynthia Nixon called ICE a “terrorist organization” and demanded the end to the agency on national television. “Parents and children aren’t just being separated at the border, they’re being separated throughout this country by the ICE,” she stated on ‘The View.’ “I think we need to abolish ICE, that seems really clear.” The New York candidate for governor launched an online petition, calling it the “first step” toward a fair immigration system. When asked what should replace ICE, she said she didn’t think doing so was necessary at all. “You know, the ICE is relatively new, it came in after September 11th,” she explained. “We’ve been handling immigration and customs for a long time here, we don’t need ICE, and they have strayed so far from the interests of the American people and the interests of humanity. We need to abolish it.” Nixon’s response came after Trump signed an executive order, ending his administration’s policy of separating migrant families at the border. More than 2,300 children were detained and removed from their guardians. NYC houses an estimated 525,000 undocumented men and women, which has made immigration a core issue for Nixon’s campaign. She’s publicly advocated for immigrants’ rights and issuing driver’s licenses to undocumented New Yorkers.
