PREP GIRLS GOLF: Decatur welcomes Explorer, Shell and Tiger for state tourneys

The Telegraph, Alton, Ill. — Greg Shashack The Telegraph, Alton, Ill.

Oct. 12--Marquette Catholic senior Ellie Kane will be making her first appearance in the Class 1A girls golf state tournament at Red Tail Run golf course.

Roxana's Bailey Sharpmack played at state last season and recalls the challenge that could loom Friday and Saturday in Decatur.

"It's a really tough course," Sharpmack said. "The wind's always blowing like 30 miles per hour."

That will not alter the outlook for Kane, who qualified for state after shooting 86 Monday at the Marquette Sectional at Spencer T. Olin in Alton.

"Just to have fun and enjoy it," Kane said of her state goals. "It's going to be cool that I went."

Sharpmack can confirm the "cool" factor after finishing 31st at state at Red Tail Run as a junior last season. She got out of the sectional at Olin with an 87.

Sharpmack, an Eastern Illinois recruit, is hoping to join Jaymie Voorhees as the only Roxana golfers to earn a state medal. Voorhees, who also played college golf at EIU, finished seventh in 2005.

"It was definitely a goal of mine to go back to state," Sharpmack said. "It's definitely a great way to end my senior year. Hopefully, I can play well and, hopefully, medal this year."

Class 2A -- Edwardsville's Addy Zeller continued her late-season surge by qualifying for the large-schools state tourney at Hickory Point in Decatur.

Zeller shot 79 to advance from the Springfield Class 2A Sectional at Panther Creek Country Club on Monday. It is first state appearance for Zeller, who won titles at the Gary Bair Invitational and O'Fallon Regional.
