A quickly-moving grass fire destroyed an abandoned mobile home Tuesday afternoon and threatened a nearby shop where volunteers make wheelchair ramps. The fire broke out shortly after 2 p.m. on County Road 210 in New Chapel Hill, where George Cronin, of the Texas Ramp Project, said he and a co-volunteer were working in their shop when they noticed the fire.

A controlled burn got out of hand due to windy conditions in the area Tuesday afternoon. The Smith County Fire Marshal's Office says that a grass fire got out of control in the Chapel Hill area, on County Road 210.

The investigation is underway to determine what ignited a 40,000-square-foot furniture distribution warehouse on County Road 496 Monday morning. The blaze, which could be seen for miles, caused the building to collapse due to the immense heat from the fire.

Several fire crews are at the scene of an early morning house fire in Lindale. Smith County officials say it started around 3 a.m. Monday in the 300 block of N. Henry Rd., just off of Highway 69. Dispatchers say the house is heavily involved, but everyone inside did get out without any injuries.

Robert Ladd is scheduled to be executed Thursday for the 1996 death of a Tyler woman, but he is not the only East Texan on the Texas Department of Criminal Justice's death row. There are nine other men and one woman from the area awaiting a scheduled date with death for crimes for which they were convicted.
