Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith said Tuesday the former detention officer and sergeant were fired after being placed on leave. A new employee at the Tyler jail alleged last month that employees improperly recorded welfare checks.

An East Texas woman was killed Monday morning in a car wreck in Smith County, a Texas Department of Public Safety official said. JoAnn Blakely Giles, 68, of Flint, was traveling eastbound in a Toyota Camry on FM 346 when her car hydroplaned and entered the opposite lane, striking a Toyota Venza driven by Larysa Boggess, 37, of Tyler.

East Texas Medical Center EMS announced Monday it is the first in Texas to launch the PulsePoint CPR/AED smartphone application, a technology designed to improve sudden cardiac arrest survival rates in communities. The app uses an iPhone or Android's geo-location service to direct citizen responders closest to the victim's location.

Lindale ISD will not take a formal stance on an upcoming alcohol options after an opposition group used its T-shirts to send an anti-alcohol message. Voters in Smith County Precinct 5, which includes the communities of Lindale, Hideaway Lake, Mount Sylvan, Swan and Garden Valley, will decide on two alcohol options on their November ballots.

Smith County investigators are still looking for suspects who broke into multiple vehicles earlier this week, stealing several items including a pistol. The burglaries occurred on the 1800 block of Oakbrook Road in Smith County.
